From Hospital to Dojo: How JUDO4CO Is Helping Children Build Health, Confidence, and Lifelong Habits
Childhood obesity is one of today’s most pressing public health challenges. While physical activity is widely recognized as part of the solution, finding an approach that is engaging, inclusive, and sustainable remains a challenge. The JUDO4CO Erasmus+ Sport project addresses this need by introducing a structured judo-based training programme specifically designed for children with obesity.
More Than Sport: A Holistic Approach
JUDO4CO goes beyond teaching judo techniques. The programme is designed to support children’s physical, psychological, motor, and social development simultaneously. Every training session encourages participants to improve coordination, build confidence, develop resilience, and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others.
Rather than focusing solely on performance, the programme creates an environment where every child can experience success through participation, effort, and personal progress.
A Safe and Supportive Hospital Environment
The pilot programme is delivered during a 14-day hospital stay, where children participate in structured judo sessions alongside their medical and educational activities. This unique setting ensures that every participant is medically supervised and supported by a multidisciplinary team.
Training sessions are led by qualified judo coaches with continuous support from hospital kinesiologists, ensuring that exercises are adapted to each child’s abilities while maintaining the highest safety standards.
Building Skills Through Play
Each session follows a carefully designed structure that combines traditional judo values with playful learning. Children begin with warm-up games and mobility exercises before progressing to:
- Safe falling techniques (Ukemi)
- Basic standing and groundwork judo skills
- Partner cooperation activities
- Team games that encourage inclusion and social interaction
- Cool-down and recovery exercises
The emphasis is always on enjoyment, gradual progression, and creating positive movement experiences.
Competition Without Pressure
JUDO4CO introduces competition in a healthy and supportive way. Instead of rewarding only winners, activities celebrate effort, improvement, and teamwork.
Because judo is organized by weight categories, children often experience fair competition for the first time, helping them develop confidence and a positive relationship with sport.
Parents as Partners
One of the programme’s greatest strengths is the active involvement of parents. During hospital sessions, families learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and the educational values of judo.
Parents also receive guidance on how to support their children’s continued participation after leaving the hospital, recognizing that long-term success depends not only on the child but also on the family’s encouragement and commitment.
From Hospital to Community
The journey does not end after the hospital programme.
Children are invited to continue training free of charge in local judo clubs, with the project providing judo equipment to remove financial barriers. This transition from a structured medical environment to community sport is a crucial step in helping participants develop lasting healthy habits and remain physically active.
Creating Lasting Impact
Early experiences from the JUDO4CO pilot demonstrate encouraging results. Participants leave sessions physically tired but emotionally energized. Many discover enjoyment in movement, experience success in sport for the first time, and develop greater self-confidence.
By combining evidence-based training, medical supervision, family engagement, and community integration, JUDO4CO is creating more than a sports programme—it is building a sustainable pathway toward healthier, more active lives for children living with obesity.
As the project continues across Europe, JUDO4CO demonstrates how sport can become a powerful tool for inclusion, health promotion, and long-term behavioural change.
